Remembrance Walk 2017

By | COCSF News

Fortune smiled on the Remembrance Walk on Saturday, February 4 as the clouds parted and the sun shone on the 20th annual celebration of this event that brings together the students, staff and community of the Charter Oak District.

A Cloudy Beginning

Despite rain and drizzle leading up to Saturday and forecasts of heavy storms to come, what began as a foggy, gray morning turned into a beautiful day. This year’s walk brought together many familiar faces from teachers, staff, administrators, and school board members who regularly attend the Remembrance Walk. A charming surprise arrived in the shape of a large group of approximately 50 students from Cedargrove who elected to participate in this year’s walk. Overall, Remembrance Walk 2017 was a great success and raised $7,909 for scholarships.

COCSF Luncheon for Charter Oak High School Senior Teachers, Counselors, Administrators

By | COCSF News

On February 15th, COCSF provided a lunch for the teachers and guidance counselors of Charter Oak High School seniors as well as for the administrative staff. This is the third year that members of the COCSF Executive Board have met with those who work with the senior students. The purpose of the luncheon is to provide staff members with the latest information on the Foundation’s mission and the process for selection of scholarship recipients.

President Patricia Nixon also encourages the teachers and counselors to promote this scholarship opportunity with this year’s seniors by reminding them of the availability of the scholarship applications both online and in the counseling office as well as the March 10th deadline for applications to be submitted. This year’s luncheon was well attended with 22 staff members present. Several of the attendees were new teachers to the school, so this was a great opportunity to share with them valuable information about COCSF. Indeed, President Patricia Nixon announced that since the Foundation’s first scholarship awards in 1970 (three $100 scholarships) the Foundation has awarded a total of 1,615 scholarships for a total amount of $714,390. These scholarships have been awarded over the last 46 years to Charter Oak District seniors and community members. Currently, the minimum scholarship is $500 and the maximum is $2,000.
